Scores of wildfires raging across the Western United States' forest and scrub have belched so much smoke that it is helping an army of firefighters gain ground on the nation's biggest blaze, Oregon's Bootleg fire, by blocking sunlight, officials said on Saturday. Both the National Weather Service and officials with the Oregon Department of Forestry said smoke in the lower atmosphere coming from California wildfires has floated over the Bootleg fire, which has scorched more than 401,000 acres in Oregon about 250 miles (402 km) south of Portland. "It's called 'smoke shading' and it's basically put a lid on the lower atmosphere for now, blocking sunlight and creating cooler, more stable surface conditions," said Eric Schoening, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City.

Poor discipline cost South Africa and they lost the game in the air as they let slip a nine-point halftime lead over the British & Irish Lions in Saturday’s first test, home coach Jacques Nienaber said after the 22-17 defeat. The Springboks had looked in command in the first half and were 12-3 ahead at the break, during which Nienaber said he emphasised more on discipline. But despite his instructions the world champions gave away four second half penalties to allow the Lions to claw back the deficit and win the game.
British & Irish Lions coach Warren Gatland praised his players for staying in the bout as an excellent second half performance powered them to a bruising 22-17 victory over world champions South Africa in the first test in Cape Town on Saturday. The Lions trailed 12-3 at halftime, but won the physical battle in the second period as they began to dominate in the scrums and finished the game much the stronger against a wilting home side. "The message at halftime was that we are still in the arm-wrestle," Gatland told reporters.
