‘Ambo’ Continues To Move Away

MANILA, Philippines --- As typhoon "Ambo" continued to move away from the Philippines, a new low pressure area (LPA) east of Southern Mindanao moved closer to the country on Monday, state weathermen said.

As of 11 a.m. Monday, the eye of "Ambo" was located some 400 kilometers (kms) east-northeast of Basco, Batanes, packing maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour (kph), and gustiness of up to 170 kph.

It is forecasted to move north-northeast at 15 kph.

The typhoon is expected to be at 700 km east-northeast of Basco, Batanes, by Tuesday morning, and by Wednesday morning, it will be some 1,040 km northeast of Basco.

"If it maintains its speed and direction, 'Ambo' will be out the Philippine area of responsibility by Tuesday afternoon or evening," Manalo said.

Senior typhoon forecaster Vic Manalo of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said "Ambo" will continue to enhance the southwest monsoon, locally called the "Habagat," and will bring rains over Southern Luzon and Visayas, especially over the western section, which may trigger flashfloods and landslides.

Meanwhile, an active low pressure area (ALPA) was estimated based on satellite and surface data at 810 km east of Southern Mindanao on Monday morning.

Manalo explained that the ALPA will still not likely to intensify into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours.

"The potential for its intensification is there but we do not see any sign that it will intensify into a tropical cyclone within 24 hours. This is still too far from the landmass," Manalo said.

If it intensifies into a tropical depression, the weather disturbance will be named "Butchoy."
