Annoying jokes trigger father to hack son-in-law

A 41-YEAR-OLD farmer was injured after he was hacked by his father-in-law who was reportedly annoyed by his “jokes” in Barangay Bala, Moalboal town, Cebu Tuesday afternoon, July 12, 2022.

Senior Master Sergeant Stewart Bayang, chief investigator of Moalboal Police Station, identified the victim as Leodegario Blanca, while the suspect was identified as Expedito Gabutero, 65.

Blanca and Gabutero are both residents of Barangay Bala.

Bayang told SunStar Cebu that they received a call around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, from a concerned citizen regarding the hacking incident.

The police found the victim with blood on his head, while the suspect was seated at the corner of the house, along with their relatives.

Relatives of the suspect said that the incident happened around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday when Blanca arrived at Gabutero’s house and started throwing jokes and insults at his father-in-law.

Gabutero said he was annoyed as he was tired from the field. He was harvesting forage for his livestock when Blanca arrived at the house.

Investigation revealed that Blanca had been annoying his father-in-law by his offensives statements and jokes.

"Matud sa father-in-law kuno nga kon magka kuyog ni sila sa mga tapok tapok ug inuman, naay istorya siya nga mabati nga molapas na nga pina joke joke lang," Bayang said.

Gabutero said he could not take it anymore, prompting him to hack his son-in-law with a 15-inch bolo.

The victim was hit at the left portion of his head. He was brought to the Badian District Hospital and got nine stitches.

The case was settled though around 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 13, when both the suspect and victim went to the Moalboal police station. (GDC)
