TACLOBAN CITY, Leyte - The Department of Labor and Employment office in Region 8 (DOLE-8) is urging local government units (LGU) in Eastern Visayas to take an active role in eliminating child labor practices in the region.
DOLE-8 regional director Exequiel Sarcauga told media here that the LGUs have primary and considerable roles in the elimination of the alarming child labor practices in Eastern Visayas.
Sarcauga cited the initiative taken by Northern Samar Governor Paul Daza who he said has taken an active role against child labor in his province, through the enactment of an anti-child labor ordinance.
He said that a survey recently conducted points to some 213,000 children aged from five to 17 years old working and exposed to hazardous work in the region.
Sarcauga said his office is very much alarmed and concerned about this development and DOLE-8 is now drawing up plans to scrap child labor in Eastern Visayas and that this will be his top priority for the current year.
