A POLICE officer was killed while his asset was hurt after a goon of a suspected drug personality caught them conducting surveillance in Barangay Casili, Consolacion town, Cebu on Sunday night, June 5, 2022.

Staff Sgt. Careby-Clyde Alinsug sustained a fatal wound on his breast and lower parts of his body after he was shot by a gunman, later identified as Reynaldo “Tatskie” Ydil, while he was gathering information on a suspected drug personality in the barangay at 8:30 p.m.on Sunday.

Alinsug’s companion, who was identified as a police asset, is in critical condition. SunStar Cebu has withheld the asset’s identity for his security.

Hours after Alinsug was killed, Ydil was eventually gunned down in his hideout in Barangay Busay, Cebu City after he attempted to fight off police officers conducting a manhunt against him.

Two of Ydil’s companions, including his girlfriend, were also arrested at the same time.

Major Jude Librando Cebrebo, Consolacion town police chief and Alinsug’s commanding officer, said the slain police officer was sent to the area after they received reports that a suspected drug personality was present there.

Alinsug, along with the police asset, were aboard a motorcycle while conducting surveillance in the area when Ydil, who reportedly worked as a hired goon for the suspected drug personality, noticed their presence.

Witnesses claimed that Ydil suddenly approached the two and started firing at Alinsug and his asset using a .45 caliber snubnose revolver or “paltik.”

Cebrebo said that while Alinsug was carrying his service firearm at the time, he was not wearing a bulletproof vest.

Alinsug was able to hurt Ydil during their shootout.

Emergency responders who were called after the incident immediately brought Alinsug and his asset to a nearby hospital, where Alinsug died before he could be admitted.

On the other hand, Ydil was able to flee from the crime scene after the incident.

Manhunt

After receiving reports of Alinsug’s death, personnel from the Cebu Police Provincial Office (CPPO) and from the cities of Cebu and Mandaue immediately conducted a manhunt operation against Ydil, which eventually led to a shootout at his alleged hideout in Sitio Tarcom, Barangay Busay in Cebu City at around 7 a.m. the following day.

Ydil’s girlfriend, Ariane Gocela, 18, and his getaway driver, Danilo Aguilar, 27, were arrested during the operation.

Lt. Col. Mark Gifter Sucalit, CPPO’s deputy director for operations, said they were able to determine Ydil’s location through CCTV cameras that recorded his escape with Aguilar in Cebu City.

Sucalit said they attempted to convince Ydil to surrender, but the suspect reportedly fired at them, resulting in a shootout.

During interrogation, Gocela told police that Aguilar was not a getaway driver but merely a habal-habal (motorcycle-for-hire) driver.

Gocela related that she and Ydil went to Consolacion to have their motorcycle repaired.

Gocela admitted that it was her boyfriend who shot Alinsug but she didn’t press him further as they immediately rode a habal-habal after the shootout occurred in Barangay Casili.

Gocela said that after the incident, Ydil had difficulty breathing after sustaining a gunshot wound on his body which he incurred in his shootout with Alinsug.

A good man

Sucalit said he and his fellow police officers in the region mourned Alinsug’s passing.

In a statement, outgoing Consolacion Mayor Joannes “Joyjoy” Alegado was saddened at Alinsug’s passing.

“I lost a very good man. His untimely demise brings so much grief and sadness. My snappiest salute to this man for he died while doing his work in protecting the community from criminal elements. My heart goes out to the bereaved family,” Alegado added.

Following the incident, Sucalit said the CPPO immediately ordered all of their police personnel to not be complacent when conducting surveillance or case buildup against suspected drug personalities in their areas.

“We want to reiterate to our personnel to observe precautionary measures when conducting intelligence operations especially involving highly dangerous personalities,” Alinsug said.

Sucalit also assured that the Philippine National Police will give assistance to Alinsug’s family and all the benefits entitled to him.

He also hopes that the incident will not deter their personnel from continuing their campaign against illegal drugs. (AYB, GPL / TPT)
