Mandaue City’s Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) was ratified by the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) on Friday, Oct. 8, 2021.
Mandaue City is the first highly urbanized city in Metro Cebu that received an approval of its CLUP.
During an online meeting, DHSUD Secretary Eduardo del Rosario virtually awarded the certificate of approval to Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes.
In his press conference, Cortes said the ratification of the CLUP is a major accomplishment of the city and that he is thankful for the efforts of the City Planning Development Office (CPDO) headed by architect Mario Ocleasa and the support of the City Council headed by Vice Mayor Glenn Bercede.
He said the last approved CLUP was in 1979 during the term of his father, former Mandaue City mayor Demetrio Cortes.
Cortes said the CLUP will serve as a guide for the city’s future plans to make Mandaue City a resilient and sustainable city.
Ocleasa, head of the CPDO, said the CLUP is a planning document prepared by local government units to rationalize the allocation and proper use of its land resources.
One of the major outputs of the CLUP is the Zoning Land Use, said Ocleasa.
He said this newly approved CLUP is a 10-year development plan prepared by the local government of Mandaue. It contains the vision of the city and identifies strategic options that guide and regulate the growth and development of the city.
“In simple terms, CLUP is a tool for managing land and natural resources at the local level,” said Ocleasa.
The CLUP includes identifying residential, commercial, industrial and mixed-use areas in the city.
Based on the CLUP data shared by Ocleasa with SunStar Cebu, the designated residential area in Mandaue City is 1,216 hectares (37.02 percent), commercial area is 712 hectares (21.67 percent), industrial is 462 hectares (14.06 percent) and mixed-use is 895 hectares (27.25 percent). (KFD)
