Leandro Kenn Manloloyo considers his recruitment to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) powerhouse San Beda Red Lions to be a “life-changing moment.”
A native of Argao who was discovered by San Beda Red Lions team manager Jude Roque during his stint in the Cebu Governor’s Cup 2019 Inter-Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament, Manloloyo says he remains in disbelief that he was actually tapped to join a team with a well-known winning tradition.
“Sa kadaghan nga maayo nga player sa Cebu, wala gyud ko gadahom nga usa ko sa mga mapilian sa San Beda. Dako kaayo kong pasalamat sa Ginoo sa dakong grasya nga akuang nadawat kay usa kini sa mga life-changing moment sa akuang kinabuhi (Of all the skilled players here in Cebu, I did not expect that I would be picked by San Beda. I give thanks to the Lord for this life-changing opportunity),” said the 6-foot-3, 20-year old cager.
As ecstatic as Manloloyo is to be joining the Red Lions, he shared that he is just as nervous with the fresh start.
“Kung unsa kadako akuang kalipay, ingun ato pud kadako ang kakulba nga akong napamati. Dili pagyud dugay nga na player ko sa usa ka unbersidad diri sa Cebu, akuang experience kay kailangan pagyud ma hasa maayo. Pero akuang paningkamutan nga dili sila magmahay nga ilaha kong gipili (As happy as I am, I am just as nervous. It wasn’t that long ago that I went to a university here in Cebu and I need more experience. But rest assured, I will strive to make sure they won’t regret getting me),” Manloloyo added.
Manloloyo will have familiar faces to work with once he gets to San Beda in fellow Argao-native, Jimboy Torion and current San Beda mainstays JB Bahio and Alex Visser. Manloloyo added that he is well aware that he needs to bulk up in order to bang with the big boys over there and said that he is keen on doing just that.
“Sa akuang panan-aw, kinahanglan pa nakong i-build up maayo akuang panlawas, andamon akuang kaugalingun mentally and physically. Mag bahin gyud ko ug oras and mag focus ko sa goals nako para magmalampuson ko didtu sa Manila (In my opinion, I need to build up by body and prepare myself mentally and physically. I will devote time and focus on my goals so that I will become successful there in Manila),” Manloloyo said. (JNP)
