The ‘arnis’ can now be seen on Philippine stamps

By Marjorie Gorospe

QUEZON CITY, METRO MANILA- The Philippine Postal Corporation (PhilPost) recently released stamps featuring ‘arnis,’ a Filipino martial arts and the country’s national sport.

This is part of efforts to promote the sport throughout the world, the PhilPost said.

The special ‘arnis’ stamps capture the unique movement and artistry of this Filipino sport, said PhilPost Postage and Philatelic department manager Lenie San Diego.

The launching of the stamps also coincides with the inclusion of the sport in the 2011 Philippine National games held in the cities of Bacolod, Bago, Talisay, and Silay in Negros Occidental recently.

The limited edition stamps are now available at the Manila Central Post Office.

“Arnis” was officially declared as the new “National Sport” of the Philippines in 2009 by virtue of Republic Act 9850. The sport aims to preserve Filipino heritage and instill nationalism, unity and identity among Filipinos.

“Arnis” is also included in most physical education classes and is being supported by the Department of Education (DepEd).
