Women in Europe doing jobs requiring the same skills as jobs done by men are still being paid significantly less, according to a study by the the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC). The major trade union organization, which represents 45 million members in 38 European countries, compared wages in two countries from Western and Eastern Europe — Germany and Romania — looking at women working in the sector of household appliances and men working in car manufacturing. In Germany, ETUC said, women in the white goods sector earn €865 less per month in gross income than men making cars, for jobs requiring similar skills.

Thai police said on Monday they were investigating a complaint by a political activist who said he had been abducted by a group of unknown men and then questioned inside a van for 12 hours before being dumped on the street. Mongkol Santimetakul, 25, a volunteer guard for the protest movement, said at around 11 p.m. on Saturday on a street near his home in a province south of Bangkok he was bundled into a van by the men who placed a hood over his head and confiscated his phone. He said he was asked about an anti-monarchy sign that was erected by protesters in a nearby area.

Some players have complained about quarantine conditions and said they had not been told they would not be allowed to train if there were positive COVID-19 cases on their flights. However, Scotsman Reid said the players knew the risks before they came. "It's a minority of the players that are kicking up a fuss but the majority of the time that minority are the loudest," Reid told Reuters via Zoom from his room. Reid, who won the Australian Open in 2016, has been in his hotel room for five days now and hasn't seen anybody, including his coach who is in the room next door. Reid was supposed to leave the hotel for five hours of training on Monday (January 18) but because of the positive tests this has been pushed back.

Walt Disney's resort in the Chinese city of Shanghai said on Monday it was investigating after a travel agency apparently refused to let a member of the Uighur Muslim minority use a resort and lodging package sold by a hotel nearby. Screenshots of a conversation between a customer who identified as ethnic Uighur and was looking to book a Disney resort package at the Aishabao Apartment Hotel in Shanghai, and travel booking platform Zlton.com, were shared on Chinese social media and on Twitter over the weekend. The guest was shown a notification that the package was not open to Uighurs, foreigners or holders of Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan identification cards, and was told the same by a Zlton customer service representative, according to screenshots of the exchange.
