VETERAN forward Arwind Santos came up clutch as he sank a jumper with 1.2 seconds left to lift the San Miguel Beermen past the NorthPort Batang Pier, 88-86, in the 2021 PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday, July 25, 2021, at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.
The jumper was redemption of sorts for the former league MVP as moments earlier, he got called for a technical foul for elbowing NorthPort’s Sidney Onweubere with 7.3 ticks. Robert Bolick sank the free-throw to tie the game at 86-all.
On San Miguel’s next offensive, Marcio Lassiter found Santos who calmly sank the jumper to put the Beermen up by two, 88-86. NorthPort still had a shot at winning the game but Kevin Ferrer’s three-point try missed as time expired.
Santos ended up with 17 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots as the Beermen pushed their win-loss record to 2-1.
CJ Perez led the way for San Miguel with 18 points, eight boards and five steals while Alex Cabagnot had 16 points and seven assists.
The loss spoiled the return of Cebuano big man Greg Slaughter who tallied monster numbers of 23 points and 17 rebounds for the Batang Pier. (JNP)
