ASTURIAS, Cebu Mayor Jose Antonio “Anto” Pintor has the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
Pintor is the sixth mayor in Cebu to test positive for Covid-19.
The mayor posted his condition on the town’s official Facebook page on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2020.
Pintor said he does not know where or how he contracted the virus. Strict quarantine protocol is in place in the town.
He said he underwent a swab test on Aug. 19 after he showed symptoms of Covid-19. The positive result came out the next day.
His wife was also swabbed on the same day, but she tested negative.
Pintor said he immediately ordered the entire town hall to be disinfected to prevent the spread of the virus.
He also suspended work at the mayor’s office on Monday, Aug. 24, so health personnel can conduct contact tracing.
Pintor said he will be admitted in a private hospital in Cebu City and urged his constituents not to worry since his condition is stable.
He urged town residents to continue following health protocol, especially the wearing of face masks and face shields when outside the house.
As of Friday, Aug. 21, Asturias logged 12 positive cases.
Aside from Pintor, five other mayors from Cebu have tested positive for Covid-19. They are Junard Chan of Lapu-Lapu City, Sun Shimura of Daanbantayan, Marlon Garcia of Barili, Danilo Diamante of Tuburan and Lakambini Reluya of San Fernando.
On Saturday, Aug. 22, the Department of Health (DOH) recorded almost 5,000 new coronavirus-positive individuals in the Philippines.
The DOH said that 4,933 new Covid-19 cases have been reported, bringing the total count to 187,249, as of 4 p.m. Saturday.
Majority of the new cases came from the National Capital Region (NCR) with 2,845.
Also seeing a high number of cases were Cavite (461), Laguna (288), Rizal (167), and Bulacan (152).
The DOH said 26 new deaths were also recorded, bringing the total number of fatalities due to Covid-19 to 2,966.
Majority of the new deaths were recorded in NCR with 17.
Other deaths were reported in Central Luzon (three), Caraga (two), Ilocos Region (one), Western Visayas (one), Zamboanga Peninsula (one) and Calabarzon (one).
As to the number of patients who have recovered from the disease, the DOH said 436 new recoveries were reported.
As of 4 p.m., the country already had a total of 114,921 recoveries.
Worldwide, the World Health Organization recorded 22,536,278 confirmed Covid-19 cases with 789,197 deaths, as of Aug. 21. (ANV / JKV / HDT / SunStar Philippines)
