The Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles remained undefeated in the Cebu qualifiers of the SM-NBTC League after it edged bitter rivals University of the Visayas Baby Lancers, 74-71, at the Cebu City Sports Institute on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2020.
The Magis Eagles dominated the first three periods and held a 55-50 lead. However, the Baby Lancers hit their stride and kicked off the fourth with a 13-6 salvo to grab the driver’s seat, 63-61. Ateneo de Cebu however, had the last say, as it pulled out all the stops in crunchtime to snatch the win and bolster its win-loss record to 2-0.
Reigning Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. MVP LA Casinillo had a double-double performance for the Magis Eagles with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Ariel Dinglasan had 14 points and eight boards. Spitfire guard Mike Boniel also had a fine showing as he tallied 13 points, two rebounds, four assists and four steals.
AJ Sacayan paced UV with 29 points and seven rebounds.
Meanwhile, in the other game, the University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors nipped the Don Bosco Greywolves, 81-79. Nathaniel Montecillo led USC with 17 points buoyed by his 3-of-6 shooting clip from beyond the arc. VJ Baruc added 15 points and six assists while big man Khadshein Tagalog played huge, scoring 14 points and pulling down 12 boards. (JNP)
