THE SHS-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles captured the Cebu City title in the SM-NBTC League qualifier after it destroyed the Southwestern University (SWU)-Phinma Baby Cobras, 116-75, in the finals at the Cebu City Sports Institute on Sunday afternoon, February 16, 2020.
Ahead by 12 at halftime, 54-42, the Magis Eagles left nothing to chance and pulled away even further, thanks to an explosive second half performance that saw them lead by as much as 49 points.
Ateneo de Cebu kicked off the third period with 16 straight points in an offensive barrage fueled by Mike Boniel, Ariel Dinglasa, Reymark Narbasa and Raffy Celis that gave them a massive 70-42 lead. When the dust settled, the Magis Eagles were already ahead by 30, 88-58, heading to the final canto.
The Magis Eagles kept on humming in the fourth as they went up, 112-63, after a basket by Joel Requima, with 5:06 left in the game.
Boniel solidified his reputation as the best young point guard in Cebu City as he tallied 23 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals for Ateneo de Cebu.
John Aguilar helped out with 12 points, four boards and three assists even as Joey Villamayor flirted with a double-double of 11 points and eight boards to go with four blocks. Tracy Dadang chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds.
Both SHS-Ateneo de Cebu and SWU-Phinma are headed to Manila to compete in the National High School Championships next month at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Dezeo Villanueva led the Baby Cobras with 21 points.
