SHS-AdC secures semis berth

THE Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Juniors B squad outlasted the SMS-Boystown, 61-57, to advance to the semifinal round in the Under-18 Division 1 category of the MVP Sports Foundation Youth Basketball League-Cebu presented by Smart Communications at the Ateneo de Cebu basketball courts on Sunday, March 8, 2020.

Trailing by nine with just six minutes left in the knockout contest, Ateneo de Cebu dug down deep and pulled within one, 53-54, after a three-pointer by Joseph Dytian, with 1:33 to go. Four straight free-throws by Angel Jabalon and Raffy Celis then shoved the Magis Eagles in front, 57-54, before a lay-up by Tristan Fuentes made it 59-54 with 16 ticks remaining.

SMS-Boystown’s sharp-shooter CJ Gonzales then drained a triple to bring them to within two, 57-59, but Celis sealed the victory for Ateneo de Cebu by coolly making two free-throws with just six seconds to go in the game.

Celis led Ateneo de Cebu with 18 points and eight rebounds while Jabalon added 12 markers, four boards and two assists. Uriel Avila also chipped in 10 points.

Meanwhile, in the Under-12 Division 1 quarterfinals, Benthel ousted Ateneo de Cebu B, 56-52, to book their place in the Final Four. Josh Cagara was unstoppable in this game as he pulled off a near triple-double performance of 21 points, 13 rebounds and eight steals to go with five assists. Luke Dy also helped Benthel out by putting up 14 markers. (JNP)
