Ateneo de Cebu wallops UV for solo lead in Cesafi Season 22 high school hoops

The SHS-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles thumped the University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lacners to secure the solo lead in the standings of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) Season 22 high school basketball tournament on Thursday night at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Magis Eagles’ win brought their win-loss record to a perfect 3-0 and sent UV tumbling to 2-1.

Although the Magis Eagles were ahead for most of the game, the Baby Lancers remained within striking distance and were just behind by five, 56-61, heading to the last period of action. However, Ateneo de Cebu found their groove in the final canto and extended their lead to 15, 81-66, to pave the way for the convincing victory.

Michael Asoro paced the Magis Eagles with 23 points, Gilas Youth guard Jared Bahay added 16, while Alden Cainglet put up 14 for the reigning Cesafi high school champions.

In the collegiate division, the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Panthers outlasted the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats, 74-70, for their second victory in three matches.

It was a close match until crunchtime when USPF sank crucial baskets to nudge ahead for good. Ajie Mendez first scored on a putback to put the Panthers in front, 68-66, with 1:15 remaining. Then, RR Cauba followed suit, scoring an easy layup off a nifty pass by point guard Neon Chavez to push their lead to 70-66 with 33 ticks to go.

CIT-U kept on coming but USPF hit their free-throws to stay in front until the final buzzer.

The veterans of USPF came through as Karl Langahin had 15 points while Mendez and Cauba added 12 apiece.

Meanwhile, Saturday’s quadruple-header will see UV battle the CIT-U Baby Wildcats at 12:30 p.m. The University of San Jose-Recoletos Baby Jaguars will then take on the Cebu Eastern College Dragons.

In the collegiate division, the University of Cebu Webmasters tangle with CIT-U at 3:30 p.m. while UV clashes with USJ-R at 5 p.m.
