Awareness: Glimpse of Mindanao through arts

The celebration of the 115th Anniversary of Philippine Independence on June 12, 2013, kicked-off in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with the mounting of an art exhibit, "Glimpses of Mindanao: Peace in the Land of Promise," at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center on May 6-10, 2013. The exhibit showcased 30 paintings of four Mindanao-based artists to depict the way of life, history, traditions, culture, sceneries in the beautiful region of Mindanao.

The exhibit was organized by the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and the National Commission on Culture and the Arts, with support from the Malysian Ministry of Information, Communication, and Culture. Its opening on May 6, 2013, was atended by members of the Diplomatic Corps in Malaysia as well as Malaysian officials and members of the Filipino community, art gallery representatives, and members of the Malaysian media.

The Philippine Embassy in Malaysia said the exhibit illustrated the hopes and dreams of the "Land of Promise," and through the artists' eyes, the citizens of the Philippines and Malaysia - both founding members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations - can see the fascinating Mindanao region. Mindanao was recently in the news because of the signing of the Framework Peace Agreement between the Philippine Government and Moro Islamic Liberation Front on October 15, 2012, which was witnessed by President Benigno S. Aquino III and Malaysian Prime Minister Dato Sri Mohb Najib Bin Tun Abdul Razak.

The people of Malaysia have a natural affinity with Mindanao, especially in art, culture and tourism. The exhibit presented the very best of Filipino Muslim culture and the arts. It celebrates the similarities between Filipino and Malaysian cultures, through the visual arts. The paintings of artist Saudi Ahmad of Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay depicted Filipino Muslims in their traditional attire, at work, at play and in prayer. The works of Chester Mato of Pagadian City presented "the interweaving of culture and technology" through the use of recycled materials. The works of Nicholas Aca Jr. of Cagayan de Oro City were about the homes of the indigenous lumads. Al Nezzar Ali depicted the Bangsamoro society in his paintings.
