LT. COL. Chuck Barandog and his wife Yvonne Cania are now out of danger after being ambushed on Sunday, May 1, 2022 in Cebu City.

Barandog has been transferred from the intensive care unit to a private room in a hospital in uptown Cebu City and was declared out of danger.

Barandog, his wife, former Cebu City Medical Center administrator Yvonne Cania, and a police security escort were on their way home to Barangay Kalunasan after attending an activity in Mandaue City when two gunmen on a motorcycle peppered their vehicle with bullets at the intersection of St. John Paul II Ave. and F. Cabahug St. in Barangay Mabolo.

They were on board a white Toyota Hi-Lux with STL Partylist stickers. Cania is the first nominee of the STL Partylist.

Barandog sustained 11 gunshot wounds in the different parts of his body while Cania was hit in the ribs and thigh.

His police security escort, who remains unidentified as he refused to be named, was also hit in the eyes by shrapnels from the car’s broken window.

Lieutenant Colonel Maria Lourdes Macatangay, information officer of the Cebu City Police Office, said Barandog’s transfer to a regular room means his condition has improved after undergoing several operations to remove the bullets from his body.

Macatangay said the Special Investigation Task Group has added two more witnesses who could narrate what transpired during the incident. The new witnesses corroborated the first witness’ statement.

The PNP Crime Laboratory had already made a report based on the evidence from the crime scene including spent shells of .45 pistol and .9mm pistol.

Macatangay said five rounds of ammunition belonged to the .45 caliber pistol while two were from the .9 mm pistol, which meant there were two gunmen at the scene.

Macatangay said the spent shells will be subjected to a cross matching by the forensic laboratory office with other shells from various shooting incidents in Metro Cebu.

The SITG will meet again this week to tackle updates on their investigation.
