Barangay councilman dies in motorcycle crash; 7 injured when pickup overturns

A BARANGAY official lost his life after his motorcycle collided with another motorcycle on the national highway in Looc Sur, Barangay Poblacion in Asturias, Cebu, last Sunday afternoon, August 14, 2022.

Alfeo Balza, a 49-year-old councilor of Barangay Langub in the midwestern town, was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

Injured in the accident was 26-year-old Renan Obligar, a construction worker from Barangay New Bago in the same town.

Obligar is undergoing treatment at the Cebu Provincial Hospital-Balamban.

Senior Sergeant Gilmer Noval of the Asturias Police Station told Superbalita Cebu that the victim was overtaking another motorcycle when he collided with Obligar’s motorcycle on the opposite lane.

The accident took place past 5 p.m.

Noval said Balza suffered severe injuries as a result of the strong impact.

Based on initial investigation, Balza was speeding, he said.

The victim’s family said they will not file a case against Obligar, adding that they are willing to settle the matter amicably.

Also on Sunday, seven family members were injured when their pickup overturned on the national highway in Barangay Anonang Norte in Bogo City, Cebu.

They were identified as Boots Bojos Pedrano, Meldy Mae Dublin Bojos, Arkisha Lace Pedrano, Lyle Arkin Pedrano, Myrna Bojos, Reynaldo Pedrano and Estrella Pedrano. They all reside in Barangay Lapaz, Bogo City.

Lieutenant Colonel Florendo Fajardo, chief of the Bogo City Police Station, told Superbalita Cebu that the victims were returning home from a trip to Carmen when the accident happened.

According to Boots, the driver, he tried to avoid hitting a car that suddenly made a U-turn on the curve when he lost control of the pickup.

The victims were rushed to the Cebu Provincial Hospital-Bogo City by personnel of the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office. (GPL, GDC, TPT, PJB)
