Barangay tanod nabbed for rape

Manila, Philippines -- A mother went looking for her mentally ill daughter last Friday only to find her allegedly being raped by a barangay tanod or public safety officer in Quezon City.

Superintendent Richard Fiesta, commander of the Anonas Police Station, identified the suspect as Jericho Bellen, a barangay public safety officer (BPSO) of Barangay Amihan.

Bellen was subjected to inquest proceedings Sunday afternoon before the city prosecutor's office for a rape complaint.

Fiesta said that the BPSO was caught raping May (not her real name), a 46-year-old mentally incapacitated woman, last Friday night at his quarters at the barangay hall.

May's 74-year-old mother went to the barangay hall while looking for her daughter. When the mother chanced upon the suspect raping her daughter, she quickly sought the help of barangay officials and had Bellen arrested.

Fiesta learned that Friday night Bellen had been drinking liquor and was already drunk when he saw May passing by the barangay hall.

The BPSO took advantage of the mentally ill woman and dragged her inside his quarters.
