Some may say "if it's good enough for the royals, it's good enough for us," and feel that this is enough an accolade to warrant buying something.

However, there is actually such a thing as a royal warrant - their official seal of approval. According to the Windsor's official website, the distinction is "granted as a mark of recognition to people or companies who have regularly supplied goods or services to HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh or HRH The Prince of Wales or their Households."

There are very few companies who are able to brag about holding all three designations (meaning they supply not only the Queen, but also the household of the Prince of Wales and, until lately, the late Duke of Edinburgh). However, the well-known British jacket-makers, Barbour hold all three bragging rights.

The brand has been a long-time favourite of the royals, both young and old, for decades now - the Queen is believed to have owned one particular waxed jacket for more than 25 years.

Princess Diana was also a lifelong member of the Barbour-loving clan and wore hers on numerous occasions - both personal and professional.

In fact, the late Princess of Wales used her Barbour to beat the rain at Ardveenish on the island of Barra during a tour of the Western Isles in the July of 1985.

The Duchess of Cambridge is also a longtime fan of Barbour and is known to have a varied collection of outerwear from the brand.

As a famed outfit-repeater, we've seen the duchess don her favourites on numerous occasions, including in 2020, where she wore a waxed Barbour during a 2020 visit to a farm in Northern Ireland, just before the pandemic hit.

During an earlier visit to Northern Ireland, this time in 2019, the duchess wore the brand's sportier style - the Longshore Quilted Jacket—during a visit to the Windsor Park Stadium, home of the Irish Football Association in Belfast.

The coats have proved to be a worthy wardrobe addition for the royals for decades. So, if you're ready to take the plunge and invest in a piece of Barbour - and British history - yourself, we've rounded up the best of the bunch.

Though not the cheapest, a Barbour jacket is a lifelong accessory - as demonstrated by the royal cohort.

It's also durable, timeless and a perfect addition to your next autumn staycation.
