Barili town backs out as Sinulog contestant

THE Municipal Government of Barili, southwest Cebu will no longer join the One Cebu Island Sinulog Grand Parade on Jan. 15, 2023.

Barili Mayor Pablo John “John-John” Garcia IV confirmed this on Saturday, Jan. 7.

Garcia said they decided to back out from the competition due to the lack of time to prepare their official contingent.

Garcia said they didn’t t have enough time to repair and beautify the props that they used during the Pasigarbo sa Sugbo last August.

“The organizers and I decided to conduct an assessment of all our dancers and even our props. When we were done, we realized that we needed more time to prepare, especially on our props. We didn’t want to embarrass ourselves if we proceeded with the presentation,” Garcia said in Cebuano.

He added that it was already late when they received a notice from organizers of this year’s Sinulog.

“It was already late when we received the information or notice. The propsmen and the props are not ready. That’s why we informed the Provincial Government that we couldn’t push through with it,” he added.

“Gamay ra gyud ang nasugdan. Wala pa sad mi kasugod og practice. Nakagasto mi pero gamay ra sad... sayang. Ang mga bata excited noon to,” Garcia said.

(We started a bit. We haven’t practiced yet. We spent money but only a little. It’s a pity. The kids were really excited about it).

The Cebu Provincial Government earlier announced that Barili was one of the nine contingents from the province that would participate in the One Cebu Island Sinulog Festival.

The Municipality was initially declared as a guest contingent, but the Capitol latter announced that it would join the parade as a contestant.

With Barili out of the list, only 23 contingents from the Province will be joining the competition.

By backing out, Barili will also not receive the P800,000 subsidy from the Capitol. (ANV / TPT)
