After an unceremonious exit from the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) playoffs, the Basilan Steel is set to join the Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup, which tips off on April 9 in the town of Alcantara.
The addition of the powerhouse Basilan squad, which made the MPBL Southern Division finals before getting forfeited during their last game because four of their players tested positive for the Covid-19 virus, adds even more flavor to the league, which recently got the green light from the Regional Task Force for Covid-19 to conduct their games in a bubble setting.
Basilan will bring in virtually the same roster from the MPBL sans star wingman Allyn Bulanadi who is recuperating from a shoulder injury and is committed to the Gilas Pilipinas program.
Coached by Jerson Cabiltes, the Steel will have the likes of veteran forward Dennis Daa, guard Hesed Gabo, big man Jay Collado, Jhapz Bautista, Phillip Manalang, Bobby Balucanag, Shaq Alanas, Gab Dagangon, and Michole Sorela. Former pros Jonathan Uyloan and Anthony Bringas are also on board.
Basilan will be competing in the tough Mindanao Division, which has the Cagayan de Oro Rafters, which has former PBA MVP Jayjay Helterbrand; Roxas Zamboaga del Norte, which has several players from the MPBL champions Davao Occidental such as Billy Robles, Richard Albo and Joseph Terso, and former PBA big man Ken Bono on board; Pagadian Explorers, Zamboanga City and Sindangan.
