Local celebrities Bea Alonzo, Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan, and others will be starring alongside American Hollywood actor Danny Trejo in the film “1521: The Battle of Mactan,” a historical epic film that will chronicle the pre-colonial era of the Philippines and depict the titular battle.

Trejo is an actor who appeared in acclaimed films such as “Machete,” “Con Air,” “Heat,” and many others.

Produced by Filipino-American filmmaker, Francis B. Lara Ho of Inspire Studios, “1521” follows Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, who led one of the first expeditions of Europeans to Asia.

Official historical records say that Magellan in 1521 first landed in the islands of Homonhon in Samar on the day of the feast of Saint Lazarus of Bethany, thus naming the country he newly discovered as Las Islas de San Lazaro (St. Lazarus’s Islands.)

Also joining the cast is One Tree Hill actor Michael Copon, who will also be the movie’s director. Copon will play the role of Datu Lapu-Lapu, a ruler in the central part of the Philippines where Magellan first landed, who defeated Magellan during the Battle of Mactan on April 27, 1521.

According to reports, "1521" held a press conference on Thursday in the province of Palawan, where they started shooting at several locations on August 2.

Meanwhile, Kapuso star Bea Alonzo will portray a native Mactan princess named Diwata, with Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan portraying the role of Ahmani, Diwata’s older sister.

In an Instagram post, Laxa-Pangilinan shared her enthusiasm for the upcoming movie during its press conference.

“Diwata and Ahmani to rock your world… soon!” the actress wrote.

The movie’s script was written by California-based writer Mary Krell-Oishi. It will also have in its roster of artists Hector David Jr., Costas Mandylor, and Terry Amos.

The film is said to be scheduled for release on June 12, 2023, in time for the Philippines’ Independence Day next year.
