South Korean artiste T.O.P, a member of popular K-pop group BIGBANG, on Thursday (20 July) received a 10-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, for smoking marijuana.

T.O.P, whose real name is Choi Seung-hyun, received a lighter jail sentence as per the prosecution’s request during his first court hearing on 29 June.

The Seoul Central District Court found him guilty of all four charges of smoking marijuana with 21-year-old female trainee, Han Seo-hee, at his home between 9 and 12 October 2016.

According to Yonhap News, T.O.P “bitterly regrets” his wrongdoing.

A suspended sentence means T.O.P will not face jail time unless he commits another offence within the specified two years.

The 29-year-old singer, rapper and actor was officially expelled from the military in June, just months after enlisting in February.

He will now have to re-enlist, as a person who has been expelled from a military division in South Korea cannot be accepted into the same unit, barring outstanding circumstances.
