Bikers, drivers, ‘tambays’ nabbed for flouting public health protocols

POLICE and civilian authorities apprehended 79 bikers, drivers and bystanders for violating health protocols during a simultaneous operation in Barangay Busay on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2021.

The operation against violators of health protocols such as wearing of masks and observing physical distance were conducted by the members of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), Cebu City Transportation Office and the Cebu City Prevention, Restoration, Order (CCTO), Beautification and Enhancement (Probe) team.

The CCTO also arrested 20 drivers who were caught for not parking in designated parking areas and non-wearing of crash helmets. It also impounded 13 motorcycles because drivers failed to show documents that prove their ownership.

Lt. Col. Wilbert Parilla, CCPO deputy director for operation, said they carried out the operation because they received complaints about bikers and drivers who flocked to the city’s mountain barangays, including Busay, and flouted public health protocols.

Bikers often violate the mass gathering mandate when they congregate outside stores by the roadside, Parilla said.

The CCPO has planned to hold checkpoints every Saturday and Sunday because many individuals who drive bicycles, motorcycles and four-wheeled vehicles often travel to mountain barangays to unwind and exercise because they do not have work.

Parilla had urged bikers and riders to wear masks to protect themselves against Covid-19, if they travel to the mountain areas of Cebu City for exercise. (AYB / KAL)
