Last season's runner-up Far Eastern University Tamaraws showed their might on court, whipping De La Salle University 74-65, in the opening game of the UAAP Season 74 at the Big Dome.
The Tamaraws broke away from a highly-contested first half as reigning MVP Ryan Roose Garcia, who has been quiet in the first quarter, scored 10 of his 21 points in the final period. Garcia fired back to back three pointers at the start of the final quarter to give FEU their biggest lead, 58-47.
"Suporta lang ako nung first half. Nung 2nd half, nakakuha na ako ng momentum," said Garcia in an interview with reporters.
"Importante sa amin itong game na ito dahil mahalaga sa amin na maganda ang start ng season," added FEU coach Bert Flores, who led the squad during their last championship in 2005.
FEU's Cameroonian player Pippo Noundou missed the game due to injury. The Green Archers weren't able to capitalize on it as FEU outran DLSU, scoring 17 points on fastbreaks, against the Archers' 14 points.
"Some of our guys did not play well. They did not step up," said LA Revilla, who was the lone standout for the Green Archers. Revilla finished the game with 18 points and five assists. Revilla's teammates, Luigi dela Paz and Jarelan Tampus scored 17 points combined.
