The University of the East, along with Adamson University, entered University Athletic Association of the Philippines during the league's first expansion in 1952. It joined founding members schools UP, UST, FEU and NU.

The UAAP league was established in 1938.

With 18 titles under its belt, the UE Red Warriors shares the record of having the second most number of UAAP basketball championships with the UST Growling Tigers. Its rival FEU Tamaraws lead the league with 19 basketball crowns.

The Red Warriors also hold the longest championship run record with seven straight UAAP titles from 1965 to 1971 and the longest finals streak with 16 straight appearances from 1957 to 1972.

The team's last championship was in 1985 while their last Finals appearance was in 2009 when it was beaten by the Ateneo Blue Eagles.

Their most prominent players include PBA superstars Robert Jaworski, Allan Caidic, Jerry Codiñera and James Yap.

Codiñera returns to his alma mater as this season's Red Warriors head coach.
