Among a handful of contenders, it was Kylie Padilla who was chosen to play the lead role in GMA-7's latest afternoon soap opera "Blusang Itim." The young actress, who previously starred in "Dwarfina" and "Joaquin Burdado" in 2008, will play the dual role of Jessa and Jessica in this remake of the 80s hit film which originally starred Snooky Serna.
According to Kylie, 'Starstruck' alumnus Sarah Lahbati, 'Bubble Gang' star Gwen Zamora, and Kapuso newcomer Isabelle Daza were among those considered for the role.
Kylie admitted that she has heard comments that she merely got the plum job because of her father Robin Padilla but hoped she could convince her detractors that she deserves the role.
"Meron din pong lumabas na nakuha ko po ito dahil kay Papa. Nasaktan po ako dun pero syempre, I hope na pag napanood na nila yung mga eksena ko ma-prove ko na nakuha kasi kaya ko naman yung drama," she Yahoo! OMG! Philippines and other entertainment reporters during the press launch of 'Blusang Itim' last night, May 9.
In fact, Kylie auditioned for the role. Her audition itself was a spur of the moment decision.
"Nagtext lang po yung handler ko sa akin nung taping ng 'Dwarfina,' and he said na may audition for 'Blusang Itim.' And he said, 'go na, para kung sakaling makuha natin.' And positive naman yung vibes after the auditions," she said.
Because the movie is too associated with Snooky and is known as a hit film, Kylie said she was initially nervous when she found out she was chosen to do the show. "Nung una, I was too nervous. Natatapos yung mga interview nun, talagang kinakabahan ako," she said. "But then, nagsi-sink in na, I was watching a few scenes (of 'Blusang Itim') on YouTube. Nag-sink in na, I was happier. Ginanahan ako para galingan, para ipakita sa mga tao na, 'kaya ko umarte!'
Kylie also said she's always wanted to do drama even though her debut acting credit was for "Joaquin Burdado," which was an action/fantasy program. The show, which starred his father, won her the Best New Female Personality Award from the PMPC Star Awards for Television in 2008.
Kylie said: "Kasi po yung 'Joaquin Burdado,' yung ginawa namin nung 2008, more on action nga po. So nakilala po ako dun but I'm ready to do drama. I've also wanted to do drama noon pa."
Between the "Blusang Itim" actress and her older sister Queenie, it's obvious that she's getting better showbiz opportunities. But despite the competition, she said there's no rivalry going on.
"Actually, sa aming dalawa, wala pong (competition na) nagaganap. Kasi syempre we grew up together. I'm sure I'll be proud of her pag nagkaroon siya ng project and she'll be proud of me. Never pong magkakaroon ng rivalry," the 18-year-old actress said.
Kylie said fellow Kapuso artist—and rumored romantic interest—Aljur Abrenica is happy for her latest showbiz success.
"Sabi po nya, palagi raw pong araling yung script and kung may ayaw po ako sa script, may karapatan naman daw po akong magsabi kay direk," she said.
The actress insisted that, despite the numerous reports saying otherwise, she and Aljur are just friends.
"We're just friends. Kasi parang ang gustong marinig ng tao na yun nga, yung kami na, but we're not. We're not. We're just friends, I'm sorry to say," Kylie said.
She added: "We both wanna be friends first."
"Busy na po sya and busy na rin po ako. May bagong show na po ako and siya may 'Temptation Island.' So sa phone na lang po kami nagkakausap."
"Blusang Itim" starts May 16 after "Eat Bulaga" on GMA-7 "Dramarama sa Hapon" block.
