Book on Sinulog dance launched

THE Kabilin Center and Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Incorporated (Rafi) launched the Monograph on Culture and Heritage book authored by Prof. Ceasar F. Nimor on Monday, January 16, 2022.

The monograph contains the historical background and context of the Sinulog dance, one of the first books to be published that focuses on the intricacies and history of the Sinulog dance.

Nimor said he had early exposure to the Sinulog dances, yet there were no scholarly texts or in-depth information about Cebu’s Sinulog.

“Na-expose na ko sa Sinulog daan but then there’s no article regarding sa Sinulog sa Cebu, except that duna na’y Sinurog, or Sinulog, sa libro ni Aquino and also ni Fajardo, sa Dances of the Philippines na na-publish, but it’s not from Cebu,” Nimor said.

(I was already exposed to the Sinulog, but there are no articles regarding Cebu’s Sinulog, except that there was Sinurog or Sinulog mentioned in the books of Aquino and Fajardo, in Dances of the Philippines that was published, but not from Cebu.)

He added that the monograph is very important to Cebuanos and the Philippines, as it contextualizes the cultural celebration.

“It’s very important... some are not really into the different explanations kung unsa’y origin ana (on where it originated from). Duha diay na ka Sinulog (There are two Sinulog), there’s the votive and there’s the combat and then ni-evolve (it evolved) into the Sinulog Festival that we have right now,” Nimor added.

Nimor is hoping that in the future, Sinulog will not be “too commercial,” and that “we would be able to go back to the essence kung unsa jud siya.”

Copies of the book are available for sale at the Casa Gorordo Museum shop and the CGM booth at SM City Cebuano until January 31, 2023. (Eiver Ky Villegas, USJ-R Intern)
