The actor played Bobby Drake, also known as Ice-Man, in the original X-Men trilogy and will star as Lamplighter in the second season of The Boys when it returns to Amazon Prime next month.
Lamplighter is described as a former superstar and member of the Seven before he left under mysterious circumstances and was replaced by Starlight/Annie January (Erin Moriarty).
He's said to tie directly into the Boys' tragic history and is *spoiler alert* actually the reason they broke up eight years ago.
"We were thrilled that Shawn – who is, let's be honest, an OG superhero – wanted to play the crucial part of Lamplighter," said The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke.
"He brings so much depth, menace, and world weary humanity to this former member of the Seven. And Shawn is a really good guy.
"We're grateful to have him join our bloody little family."
Knowing what we now do, it should come as no surprise that Lamplighter is set to poke a few raw nerves and dredge up painful memories in season 2, changing everything for the group.
Shawn's casting comes alongside the reveal that The Boys will have an aftershow this season titled Prime Rewind: Inside The Boys.
Hosted by Aisha Tyler, the aftershow will debut on August 28 with a look back at the first season before continuing through the coming weeks.
The first three episodes of The Boys season 2 will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on September 4, with new episodes available each Friday following until its season finale on October 9.
The Boys season one is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, with season two launching on September 4.
