Let’s shed the spotlight on an underrepresented segment of the queer community: The gender non-binary. By definition, a gender non-binary or genderqueer person is someone who does not identify as either male or female, and may use singular they/them pronouns. While the concept may raise a few brows, these five celebrities choose to live their truths to the fullest and refuse to be bound by society’s binaries.
Amandla Stenberg | Pronouns: She/Her
Stenberg rose to fame after appearing in “The Hunger Games” as District 11 tribute Rue and starred in the critically acclaimed film adaptation of young adult novel “The Hate U Give.” In 2015 and 2016, the 21-year-old was included in Time’s list of Most Influential Teens.
Indya Moore | Pronouns: They/Them
Moore is most known for playing trans woman Angel Evangelista in FX’s “Pose” and Goddess in “Queen & Slim.” If you follow them on Instagram, you’d also know that they are very vocal about their activism. The artist is set to appear in the sequel of thriller “Escape Room” next year.
Tommy Dorfman | Pronouns: They/Them
Dorfman made their big acting debut as Ryan Shaver in Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why” and went on to play a recurring role in “Jane the Virgin” and a small role in “Insatiable.” In 2017, they were awarded the first-ever GLAAD Rising Star Award for using their platform for LGBTQ acceptance and awareness.
Jonathan Van Ness | Pronouns: He/Him
Van Ness has won over the hearts of people from all over the world since appearing in Netflix’s “Queer Eye” reboot as the Fab Five’s grooming expert. He is also known for his work on the hilarious web series parody “Gay of Thrones.” He hosts a podcast called “Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness” as well.
Sam Smith | Pronouns: They/Them
With a slew of awards under their belt, the 28-year-old has certainly come a long way since “Latch” by Disclosure, released in 2012. Smith will be releasing their third album sometime this year, which includes already released songs like “How Do You Sleep?”, “To Die For,” and “I’m Ready” with Demi Lovato.
