The central bank has launched limited edition commemorative coins in three designs as a tribute to history and to Filipinos working overseas.

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said the coins, in P5 and P10 denomination, feature the 150th year of Philippine hero Apolinario Mabini, and the Leyte landing that paved the way to Philippine liberation in World War II. There is also a P5 “Bagong Bayani” commemorative coin as tribute for OFWs.

It is not clear how many pieces will be in circulation.

"As a matter of policy, the BSP commemorates significant events and heroic Filipinos in our country’s history through the minting of coins, medals or overprints on our banknotes,” BSP said in its statement.

BSP previously issued commemorative circulation coins for 150th year of National Hero Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio in 2011 and 2013, respectively.

In 2015, BSP will also release P50 and P500 coins for Pope Francis’ visit to the Philippines.
