Building’s wall collapses in Mandaue

HEAVY rains may have caused the warehouse building to collapse on V. Albaño Street, Sitio Sugar Valley, Barangay Maguikay, Mandaue City on Wednesday morning, June 22, 2022.

Florante De Lima Jr., deputy emergency volunteer of the Bureau of Fire Protection, said he believes that heavy rains have caused one of the walls of the building, which is still under construction, to collapse.

Nobody was hurt in the incident as the construction workers hurriedly left the area when they noticed that the building was shaking and about to collapse at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday.

One of the residents of Sugar Valley Subdivision immediately reported the matter to the Bureau of Fire and Protection (BFP), which, in turn, called the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office for assistance.

According to Gelyn Barino, a barangay health worker, the construction of the ill-fated building started sometime in December before Typhoon Odette.

Construction workers were spared from harm, as most of them stopped working as they took shelter due to heavy rainfall, Barino said.

De Lima said that when they checked on the collapsed building, they found out that its fillets or bars used for reinforcing the concrete walls were small or fell below the standard size.

De Lima is hoping the management can find a solution to address the problem to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

The pathway of residents living near the area is also blocked by falling debris and is needed to be cleared by the management.

"Maghuwat ra mi sa management kung unsa ila plan ani nga maaksiyonan ni pero for the meantime, nagbutang na mi ug crossing tape nga danger zone area anang dapita para malikayan ang aksidente (We will just wait for the management about their plan to act on it, but for the meantime, we installed a crossing tape, indicating that the area is a danger zone to avoid an accident)," De Lima said.
