Business leaders urge workers anew to get vaccinated amid threat of delta variant

BUSINESS leaders in Cebu stressed the need to hasten the vaccination rollout and urged more workers to get vaccinated amid the looming threat from the delta variant.

Filipino-Cebuano Business Club chairman Rey Calooy said coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccines should be administered in vaccination sites that are convenient to the public.

“There should be fast-tracking on the opening of more vaccination centers and, at the same time, provide vaccination express modes like door-to-door or drive-thru for habal-habal riders etc.,” he told SunStar Cebu.

Major malls and hotels have recently become additional vaccination sites to make inoculation closer to the public and to encourage them to get vaccinated.

Calooy said the vaccination rollout should be a concerted effort of all sectors since the Covid-19 pandemic is a global health crisis.

For Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Felix Taguiam, the experience of business owners last year should prepare them for any eventualities that might happen.

As rising Covid-19 cases continue to plague Cebu and hospitals see a surge of admitted patients, Taguiam said employees should get inoculated.

“Since the economy is starting to ramp up operations, we are encouraging business owners to have their employees vaccinated. Don’t let down the guard. We have experienced last year’s surge and we have experienced what it can do to our economy,” he said.

Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Steven Yu said the delta variant’s local transmission is not good news.

However, the public should not panic and just act with more caution.

“After 16 months of living with the virus, we have vastly improved our ability to prevent-detect-isolate-treat-reintegrate and our health care facilities and capacities have greatly improved and increased,” he said.

Yu stressed that vaccination is an added means of protection.

“Cebu has now vaccinated almost 20 percent of its eligible population. With the arrival of more vaccines, we are enjoining everyone to help spread vaccine confidence,” he said.

As of July 23, 2021, a total of 619,473 vaccine doses have been administered across all public and private sector vaccination centers in Cebu, according to the Visayas Covid-19 Vaccination Operations Center.

Project Balik Buhay vaccination sites are located in Cebu City — PBB-IEC Vaccination MegaCenter, University of San Carlos-Talamban Campus, Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital, Visayas Community Medical Center, SM City Cebu (Cebu Trade Hall, 3rd Level), SM Seaside City Cebu (Sky Hall, 3rd Level); Mandaue City — Chong Hua Hospital-Mandaue, Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu and UC Medical Center; Lapu-Lapu City — ARC Hospital, Mactan Doctors’ Hospital and Toyota Lapu-Lapu; Consolacion — Mendero Medical Center; and Talisay in Toyota Talisay.
