CLOSE to 14 tons of cabbages from Dalaguete town were initially delivered to the temporary Bagsakan Center at the Cebu South Bus Terminal on Saturday, July 25, 2020.
Dalaguete Mayor Jeffrey Belcina said the cabbages were delivered to the CSBT’s Bagsakan Center after Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia ordered them to have their remaining stocks brought to the city for selling.
The cabbages will be placed in cold storage vans at the CSBT before they are brought to other towns.
The Province has initiated moves to help farmers in Dalaguete after some of them complained that their sales were affected due to strict checkpoints and quarantine controls between Cebu Province and Cebu City.
Farmers from Dalaguete complained that they had to sell their produce for less due to the oversupply and a lack of demand.
Belcina said Garcia’s move will benefit their farmers greatly especially since another harvest is set to take place in the coming days.
“We expect that more of our produce will be brought to the city as our farmers are expecting to bring their harvest soon due to the rainy season. With the governor buying their harvest, they won’t have to worry,” Belcina said in Cebuano.
He thanked Garcia for aiding their farmers, especially since their livelihood has been greatly affected because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
He urged farmers in his town not to get discouraged and to continue doing their work.
Belcina also urged his fellow local officials in neighboring towns and even in highly urbanized cities to get their vegetables from their town as a way to help their farmers. (ANV, JKV)
