Cargo ship catches fire at sea; mariner dies, 3 others wounded

ONE seafarer died while three others sustained major burns as their cargo vessel went ablaze in the waters off Barangay Pooc, Talisay City, Cebu on the morning of Easter Sunday, April 17, 2022.

The second engineer of mv General Romulo was declared dead when a huge fire destroyed the accommodation area of the ship.

The casualty was identified as Nelson Polvorosa, 62 years old from Cavite. Members of the Philippine Coast Guard and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) retrieved Polvorosa’s remains past 4 p.m. Polvorosa’s body was stuck in the debris in the ship’s interior.

An investigation by the BFP will determine the cause of the fire. The firefighters were able to control the fire from spreading further in the ship past 12 p.m.

Due to the thick smoke coming from the ship, the BFP’s Special Rescue Force had to use special equipment and breathing apparatus to penetrate the interior of the ship.

Three crew members were also rushed to the hospital after sustaining burns on their body, according to Alvin Santillana, head of the Talisay City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

The first to arrive at the scene were personnel from Talisay City’s Fisheries Sea Ecological Care and Youth Quick Response team of Barangay Pooc. They brought the three injured seafarers to the shore.

These were Gerwin Bataanon, 31; Ricky Ferrancullo, 52; and Selmo Socrates, 58.

Bataanon suffered first-degree burns in the face and third-degree burns in the upper left extremities and neck.

Ferrancullo sustained first-degree burns in the chest and both hands while Socrates suffered first-degree burns in the right hand.

The crew members who were rescued were Kimler Lingab, Samuel Cornita, Roman Esterno, Aldrin Mark Pagupat, Denver Sibayan, Mark Beronio, Jay Loya Binez, Lorente Flores, Clifford Magahis, and Evojan Cabunitaa, Armand Edano, Jeric Daradar, Nemesio Fontanillas, Alex Caldino, Argie Gervacio, Ferdinand Barcelona, Elmer Nicomedez, Clifford Villanueva, and Roldan Ramirez.
