Carl Tamayo leads UP to easy win over UE

Up-and-coming Cebuano big man Carl Tamayo showed his multifaceted game once again to lead the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons past the University of the East Red Warriors, 86-63, in the 2022 Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup on Wednesday night at the Filoil EcoOil Centre.

Ranged against an undersized UE frontline, Tamayo had no trouble scoring from all over the floor, putting up 15 points in the first half alone to while the entire Red Warriors team scored just 23.

The Talisay City native finished with 20 points, four rebounds, two assists, a block, and a steal to tow the Fighting Maroons to their third win in as many games.

"Ginawa ko lang yung dapat gagawin para sa team. Just trying to set the standard," said the 21-year-old forward, who has taken no time off after playing for Gilas Pilipinas in the 2023 FIBA World Cup Asian qualifiers third window and the 2022 FIBA Asian Cup as well as for State U in two preseason leagues.

Malick Diouf also made his debut in the competition and had 15 markers, seven rebounds, and three assists.

"Actually, maganda yung nakukuha naming exposure for everybody. Ito yung wala sa atin last season e, 'di ba? So lahat ng chance to build the team by playing in other leagues, malaking tulong for the coming season," said head coach Goldwin Monteverde.

With UP's twin towers blocking their path, UE couldn't get going to suffer back-to-back losses to begin their campaign.

Abdul Sawat topped the scoring column for them with 14 points.
