Carreta officials boost intelligence ops

OFFICIALS of Barangay Carreta in Cebu City have vowed to intensify its campaign against illegal drugs by conducting “lecture-concerts” and boosting its intelligence operations.

The barangay launched its first-ever “Kapihan sa Carreta” on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023, to discuss the achievements and plans of its Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council (Badac).

Badac focal person Lynleynita Saga reported that in 2022, a total of 65 drug personalities had been arrested in the barangay through joint operations conducted by the Philippine National Police and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency.

Saga said a total of 298.1 grams of suspected illegal drugs had been seized with an estimated value of P2.027 million.

For 2023, Councilor Antonio Conahap said the barangay will be allocating P180,000 for the continuation of its Badac programs through seminars, training and lecture-concerts.

Conahap said the lecture-concert is a combination of entertainment and education that will be conducted at the barangay’s top five sitios.

The top five sitios are Sitio Ponce 2, Sitio Laray, Sitio Negative Barrio, Sitio NRA, and Sitio Chinese-Ludo Cemetery.

Aside from this, the “Kapihan sa Carreta” will also be conducted once a month to give its barangay’s estimated 12,700 residents updates on what the village officials are doing to mitigate the presence of illegal drugs in their community.

Barangay Captain Marciano Ando admitted that they are having a hard time in completely eradicating illegal drugs in the barangay since most of the peddlers come from other barangays.

Ando also lamented that barangay tanods cannot do much since most of the drug personalities are armed with weapons.

What the barangay is doing to help police authorities is to provide them with intelligence information to help apprehend suspected drug personalities, he added.

Based on data provided by the PNP and PDEA, there are still around 200 drug personalities identified as residents of Carreta.

Ando said they are closely coordinating with the authorities since it is the goal of the barangay to have it declared as drug-free.
