Cashier, neighbor nabbed for trying to steal grocery items

A WOMAN and her neighbor were arrested after they were caught trying to steal items from a grocery inside a mall in Barangay Lamac, Consolacion, Cebu on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2022.

The suspects were identified as Jeden Molejon Cabang, 20, and Maria Amina Danlag Bentig, 27.

The two reside in Purok Ipil-ipil (Tata-an), Barangay Estaca in the neighboring town of Compostela.

Cabang works as one of the cashiers at the grocery.

According to Staff Sergeant Arnold Rusiana of the Consolacion Police Station, Cabang and Bentig were arrested by the mall’s security guard.

Based on their initial investigation, Bentig headed to the cashier’s booth manned by Cabang after she was done shopping. Cabang then placed most of the items inside a plastic bag without scanning them.

The security guard noticed what was going on and accosted the two.

After an inventory, the total cost of the items was found to be P6,689.57, but the receipt only showed P127.65.

Mall management learned that it was not the first time that Cabang and Bentig had stolen groceries.

“They’ve done it three times. Bentig would do the shopping while Cabang would punch in the wrong amount at the cash register,” Rusiana said in Cebuano.

He said the security guard has been watching all cashiers for suspicious activities. (GPL / PJB)
