Catholic priest Fr. Romeo Lopez voiced his intent on Wednesday (June 22) to join the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) to the dismay of the diocese of La Union.
“[...] we regret to inform you that, for a long time already, he has been contemplating on joining the Iglesia ni Cristo. This he expressed in his letter to the Bishop, Most. Rev. Daniel O. Presto, dated June 12, 2022 which they discussed during their dialogue on June 13, 2022,” Chancellor Re. Fr. Nelson N. Quitaleg of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Fernando de La Union (DSFLU) wrote in a statement.
Lopez, also known as “Apo Romy” or “Fr. Romy,” previously served as the Holy Guardian Angels’ parish priest and is also a part of the DSFLU. He officially retired last January 30 after 35 years of serving the church. The La Union diocese described Lopez as being “diligent in his works and apostolate in the different parishes he has been assigned to.”
Quitaleg said that the diocese is “communicating and doing our best to stop Fr. Romy from what he is doing since this has been causing confusion and scandal among the faithful.” He also “appeal[ed] to the lay faithful” to pray for Lopez, hoping that the issue does not escalate further.
Whether or not Lopez has pushed through with his plans or whatever his reasons may be, are currently unconfirmed.
As of writing, Lopez himself is yet to respond to Yahoo Philippines’ inquiries.
