CCMC referral of patients to VSMMC ‘valid’

THE Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC) justified that all referrals of patients to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) were valid.

Dr. Mary Jean Loreche said in a statement sent to SunStar Cebu Thursday, August 25, 2022, that from January to August 2022, CCMC has made referrals to a total of 343 patients to the VSMMC but only 252 were accepted.

Loreche, the city’s consultant for health, explained that during that period, the CCMC was only allowed to operate under a Level 1 Category Healthcare Facility.

“There were cases and procedures that needed a referral to a higher institution such as VSMMC, a government apex hospital,” said Loreche.

Loreche added that upon further scrutiny of the records, it was revealed that the referred cases required further management with the capabilities and expertise of VSMMC, such as neuro-surgical and orthopedic procedures, ENT cases requiring special procedures, and emergency cesarean deliveries.

“It’s not because physicians of CCMC do not want to care for these patients. Cases were referred for proper management and treatment considering the unavailability of medical specialists and the inherent limitations of a level 1 health care facility,” Loreche said.

Last August 24, Garcia made a stern warning to medical personnel, particularly doctors in provincial hospitals, who referred patients to the VSMMC.

She said the Province will identify the doctors on duty and those who referred the patients to VSMMC despite them being capable of handling the cases at the provincial level.

“Well, expect a meeting nga makig-atubang ko kadtong mga moderetso lang og refer nga kaya ra gyud unta on provincial level,” said Garcia, stressing that the Provincial Government had invested a lot of money for their salary yet they seemed to operate like clinics. (IRT)
