AROUND 175 police personnel will be deployed to secure the motorcade route for the opening salvo of this year's Fiesta Señor at the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño on Friday, January 7, 2021.

Aside from the 175 police officers, personnel from the Cebu City Goverment and even military personnel will be present to ensure that the first day of novena masses are peaceful.

Lieutenant Colonel Wilbert Parilla, deputy director for operations for the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), told reporters that their personnel will be complemented with soldiers from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP)'s Visayas Command and even personnel from the city's Prevention, Restoration, Order, Beautification and Enhancement (Probe) and City Environment Sanitation Enhancement Team (Ceset).

Police, military and city security forces will be station in various corners along uptown Cebu City to help secure the images of the Sto. Niño and the Virgin Mary which will be paraded through a motorcade from Fuente Osmeña to the Basilica.

Personnel from the Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) will also be present to ensure that the traffic situation along the motorcade route remained moving.

Parilla believes that even with the Basilica's announcement that all religious activities will be held virtually due to a possible Covid-19 surge and due to the recent effects of Typhoon Odette, more people are expected to flock to the Basilica to attend the fiesta's opening salvo.

But with their current augmentation, Parilla assured that they will strictly implement the minimum health protocols, particularly social distancing, inside and outside the church.

With this, Parilla urged devotees to follow health protocols and to avoid crowds as much as possible.

Parilla added that they will not allow devotees to enter the Basilica once the novena masses begins.
