CCPO: Seaborne procession 2023 ‘generally peaceful’

THE Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) described the seaborne procession of Señor Sto. Niño on Saturday morning, January 14, as generally peaceful.

A foot procession from Pier 1 to the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño followed the seaborne procession.

CCPO Chief Colonel Ireneo Dalogdog said at least 352 police personnel were deployed to provide security throughout the activity.

Aside from the police, some members of the Philippine Coast Guard and the Armed Forces of the Philippines Visayas Command also joined the procession.

Dalogdog said there were also civilian personnel who helped secure the foot procession from Pier 1 to Basilica.

The police have not recorded any criminal incident despite the huge number of people who lined up along the coastline from South Road Properties (SRP) up to Pier 7 in the North Reclamation Area to witness the event.

“Sumala sa akong obserbasyon, dili nako mahatag ang figure exactly pero pwerte gyung daghana ang mga tao nga nag-witness sa atoang fluvial procession kaganina,” Dalogdog said.

(I could not give an exact figure but based on my observation, there were a lot of people who witnessed our seaborne procession.)

The sea parade started at 6 a.m. from the Mactan Channel going to SRP and back to Pier 1 in Cebu City. It was participated by almost 200 sea vessels.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Jomar Medil, ground commander of the seaborne procession, said the activity went smoothly as they were able to control the crowd when the image of the Sto. Niño arrived in Pier 1.

Medil said they followed the operational plan of Task Force Sinulog by cordoning off the area to prevent people from going near the cart, which carried the images of the Santo Niño and the Our Lady of Guadalupe.

“Wala mi maglisud. So far, cooperative ra man tanan nya magpasalamat ko sa other agencies nga ni-cooperate sila sa atoa,” Medil added.

(We did not encounter any difficulty, so far all were cooperative and I thanked the other agencies for cooperating with us.) (AYB, TPT)
