CCTO in favor of granting traffic violators amnesty

THE Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) is in favor of granting amnesty to traffic violators but drivers must first undergo a refresher course on traffic rules and safety.

This, after the City Council approved on first reading Wednesday, November 9, 2022, the proposed resolution of Councilor Rey Gealon that aims to provide amnesty to traffic violators for their accumulated fines, penalties, interests, surcharges, and storage fees.

CCTO head Raquel Arce told SunStar Cebu Thursday, November 10, that she is okay with Gealon’s ordinance since this will also emphasize that their office “is more concerned about educating motorists about the need for discipline in the streets rather than apprehending them to collect fines.”

But Arce said the amnesty should not be granted immediately and traffic violators must first be taught again with road safety and traffic rules.

“Ang mo human sa refresher course ato pa pirmahon og pledge or commitment na dili na sila mo usab pag violate sa traffic laws,” said Arce.

In Gealon’s proposed ordinance, only those who are “bona fide residents of good moral character and registered voters” of Cebu City can avail themselves of the amnesty. (IRT)
