Cebu City has 3 years to clear 14,000 illegal structures along waterways

AN ESTIMATED 14,000 illegal structures are encroaching on the three-meter easement along seven waterways that the Cebu City Government plans to clear.

However, Gerry Carillo, chairman of the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC), said they’ve only tagged 2,000 illegal structures for demolition.

Carillo said affected owners will be relocated and will receive P35,000 as financial assistance from the Department of Public Works and Highways.

In an interview on Monday, Aug. 29, 2022, Carillo explained that only those structures that are found inside the three-meter easement will be torn down.

The CDRRMC chairman hopes to complete the clearing operation within three years.

Mayor Michael Rama had ordered the immediate removal of settlers within the three-meter easement of waterways to prevent casualties during heavy rains.

The project is also in line with the mayor’s vision of Cebu to be “Singapore-like.” (PAC/PJB)
