Cebu City Government to implement shared lanes for motorcycles, bicycles

THE Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) is now preparing road signages for the pilot testing of the implementation of shared lanes for motorcycles and bicycles.

CCTO executive director Paul Gotiong said on Friday, Sept. 23, 2022, that they have identified the Cebu South Coastal Road and N. Bacalso Ave. as key areas for the shared lanes.

Gotiong added that this traffic scheme has already been implemented in the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway and the CCTO now wants to have this implemented on the city roads.

The shared lanes will then be interconnected with the neighboring cities of Talisay in the south and Mandaue in the north.

“We have a bike lane but not all the time nga naay bike nga moagi so masayang siya. We also want nga kani atong mga motorcycles, para dili sila mag balhin-balhin og lane, atoa sila i-group in one lane,” said Gotiong.

(We have a bike lane but not all bicycles pass through it, so it is not serving its purpose. We also want the motorcycles, for them not to change lanes all the time, we will group them into one lane.)

According to Gotiong, they are now in the process of acquiring the road signs to indicate that motorcycles and bicycles should use the outer lanes of the road.

Gotiong said they will soon start putting up blue paint to signify that the road sector is a shared lane for motorcycles and bicycles.

He added that the CCTO will not immediately apprehend drivers who will violate the new traffic scheme without educating the motorists first.

“This is still a pilot project. We cannot enforce [right away]. We will try to educate the people [to use the lane] because this is part of road safety,” said Gotiong.

Gotiong further said that by implementing this program, the CCTO is hoping that vehicular accidents will be lessened.

The Cebu City Government will be holding its first mobility summit wherein representatives from neighboring local government units will also provide their inputs to improve the traffic situation in Metro Cebu.
