THE Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) received a bomb threat from an anonymous number at 10:19 a.m., Friday, August 27, 2021, at the Cebu City Hall.
As of writing, the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit is still searching for possible explosives in the area.
CDRRMO officer-in-charge Ramil Ayuman, in a Facebook Live episode on Cebu City Public Information Office’s (PIO) Facebook page, said the text message came from an unknown number.
Ayuman said the text message stated, "Mayro'ng bomba kaming itinayo sa City Hall. Kung gusto nyong maligtas ang inyong mga empleyado, gumawa na kayo ng mabilis na aksyon bago pa ito sumabog."
(There is a bomb we installed inside City Hall. If you want to save the employees, act quickly before the bomb explodes.)
Ayuman said they tried to call the number, but the owner's number did not answer.
He believed that the text message looked like a hoax or a joke, but the standard operating procedure (SOP) of the CDRRMO is to search to clear the area.
City Hall employees were evacuated five minutes after the text message was received, said Ayuman.
City Hall operations will resume once the building is cleared, he said.
Cebu City Administrator Floro Casas Jr. said the City will ask the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) to look into the matter immediately.
"Even if it's a hoax, we consider this a very serious matter," said Casas.
Ayuman said the CDRRMO will also submit an official report to the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to check the text message, as well as the number.
Ayuman asked those responsible for such pranks to stop doing this since they are only causing panic to the public, especially now with the Covid-19 pandemic. JJL
