CEBU City recorded the highest number of new daily infections at 505 cases and the highest positivity rate at 33.05 percent on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2022.

These figures are the highest since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, said Councilor Joel Garganera, deputy chief implementer of Cebu City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

The new cases bring the total number of Cebu City’s active cases to 2,099.

New cases started to surge at double digits on Jan. 4, 2022, up from single digits at the start of the year.

Garganera stated that the daily positivity rate of 33.05 percent from 1,528 tested individuals was the highest since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a span of 15 days, the city logged the lowest positivity rate at 0.61 percent on Jan. 1, 2022 and the highest, at 33.05 percent on Jan. 15, 2022.

But despite the surge of infections in the last 15 days, the EOC only recorded two deaths. They were two elderlies who were immunocompromised.

Garganera earlier said that despite the surge in cases, hospitals are at a very minimum occupancy.

So far, the city has activated the barangay isolation centers of City Central School, Zapatera and Labangon Elementary Schools.

The Inter-Agency Task Force earlier placed Cebu City and the entire Cebu island under Alert Level 3.

Dr. Mary Jean Loreche, chief pathologist of the Department of Health in Central Visayas (DOH 7), earlier said that the significant rise of Covid cases in the island, particularly in Cebu City, may be due to the Omicron variant.

However, she clarified during her press briefing on Friday, Jan. 14, that there was no Omicron variant detected in the region yet.

The chief pathologist said they were still waiting for the results of the 81 samples they sent to the Philippine Genome Center.

The EOC’s contact tracing also showed that the sources of infection are both household and outside transmission.

Majority of the outside transmissions are coming from the workplace, supermarket, hospital medical frontliner, strolling, carenderia, persons deprived of liberty, public market, gathering, medical clinic, public transport, delivery services, vaccination site, neighborhood, dialysis center, among others.

Meanwhile, DOH 7 case bulletin on Saturday, Jan. 15, reported 1,082 fresh cases, pushing the region’s total active cases to 4,813.
