Cebu City negotiates with DepEd 7 over number of schools to be used as temporary shelter for Mambaling fire survivors

THE Cebu City Government is coordinating with the Department of Education Central Visayas (DepEd 7) for the temporary relocation site of survivors of the fire that broke out in Sitio Tugas, Barangay Mambaling on Tuesday night, November 1, 2022.

Dr. Ester Concha, head of the Department of Social Welfare and Services (DSWS), told SunStar Cebu on Wednesday, November 2, that the ongoing validation showed that 527 individuals were affected by the blaze that destroyed more than 100 houses.

Concha said they are still negotiating with DepEd 7 over the number of schools that can be used as temporary shelter considering that the full implementation of face-to-face classes began on Wednesday.

The DSWS started providing hot meals to survivors right after the fire was put out since many of them were children, she said.

Concha said they will put up a drop box at the Mambaling Elementary School for donations.

She said survivors are entitled to receive financial assistance from the City Government through the recently approved ordinance that automatically grants cash aid to house owners, renters, sharers, lodgers and absentee owners affected by a fire.

Concha said owners will receive P20,000, while sharers and renters are entitled to P10,000 each. Lodgers and absentee owners receive P5,000 each, she added. (IRT)
