THE CHBC-Cebu Landmasters pulled away in crunchtime to defeat Ballerhood and capture the championship in the Cebu Youth Basketball League Summer Showcase on Sunday at the Alta Vista Golf and Country Club basketball court.
Down by six, 75-81, early in the final canto, the Cebu Landmasters—which was composed of the SHS-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles—uncorked a massive 23-6 run to snatch the victory and the crown.
The Cebu Landmasters’ defense suddenly clamped down on Ballerhood’s main men, and translated the defensive stops into easy transition points to grab an 85-81 lead. Mike Asoro then added four straight points to bring their lead to eight, 89-81.
Jerwin Espina completed a three-point play for Ballerhood to stop the bleeding but Batang Gilas Under-16 pool member Jared Bahay and Asoro combined to score six straight to snuff out the fire and bring their lead to nine, 93-84. The Cebu Landmasters then closed the game out in emphatic fashion with Know The Culture MVP award-winner Raffy Celis throwing down a thunderous two-handed slam.
Asoro led the Cebu Landmasters with 21 points and four assists, while Bahay added 17 markers and five dimes.
Jhoernel Tangkay, the son of Cebuano hoops great Jojo Tangkay, chipped in 15 points, while Celis had a double-double of 14 points and 10 boards.
Ballerhood sorely lacked the services of wingman NJ Atunay, who fouled out with over six minutes remaining. Atunay finished with 22 points and 10 boards.
The Know The Culture Mythical Five team was composed of Celis, Ballerhood’s Kline Ochavo and Santos Go, Tisa’s Glenn Contado, and Green Rose’ Earl Aguilar.
The CYBL is the brainchild of the late great Cebuano sportsman Rico Navarro. The league is now being managed by his son, Popoy Navarro. (JNP)
